Fwd: Reverse Engineering - Variable Voltage Reference - SWR - Oscillators & Timers

HOW DO THEY DO THAT?

Reverse engineering is one of the most challenging and rewarding endeavors in electronics. I'm talking about replicating the functionality of a device that you've seen or read about but that's too expensive or otherwise unavailable. There are numerous issues involved in reverse engineering — from creating a schematic to locating parts. Moreover, you have to understand what's going on.

BUILD A VARIABLE VOLTAGE REFERENCE

A voltage reference is a zener diode-like semiconductor that produces an accurate fixed voltage; often, five or 10 volts. The downside to a voltage reference is that it only generates a single voltage and has limited current output. I decided to design a circuit that could generate any voltage between zero volts and 10 volts in 0.1 volt increments. Here's how I constructed my variable voltage regulator.

TRANSMISSION LINES AND SWR

Any conductor carrying an AC current can be treated as a transmission line. Here, we'll talk about a basic element of transmission lines: the standing wave ratio. Find out why it's important and how to measure it.

Common Problems in the Design of Digital Oscillators and Their Remedy

Electronic designers are familiar with the apparent perversity of Nature in the tendency of amplifiers to oscillate and oscillators to amplify. But even the beginning designer knows that questions of oscillation and stability involve feedback — that ubiquitous structure in natural systems and many man-made ones — whereby a fraction of the system's output energy is fed back to the input to produce useful effects.
